Fabrication of 3D Platforms for Discovery in Biology

Prof. Ralph G. Nuzzo
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign

There have been significant advances made in the areas of Materials Synthesis and Soft Lithography that, in concert, provide significant synergies to drive discovery in biology. The material presented in this lecture will highlight the advances being made in a collaborative program of research at the University of Illinois that is providing new materials platforms and functional devices that provide significant competencies for investigating complex biomolecular systems. This work highlights the significant progress being made in the development of systems for sustaining and manipulating ensembles of mammalian cells within stable 3D microcultures and integrated tools for modifying and speciating the complex chemical environments in which they are embedded. Applications that will be highlighted include advances in label free detection, plasmonic imaging, and 3D materials scaffolds for inducing integrated forms of cellular growth by design.
